Commitment for employees

Motivated and committed employees are crucial to our business success, so we create an attractive, fair and safe working environment. We promote diversity, individuality and personal responsibility within our workforce. We facilitate our employees’ personal and professional development, and we motivate them to be creative and innovative. We enable our members of staff to breathe life into METRO and its principles. That also means acting responsibly, thinking ahead and developing sustainable solutions. METRO systematically integrates the issue of sustainability into its staff development programmes, seminars and training courses. This means, for instance, turning the young managers on the METRO Sustainable Leadership Programme into ambassadors for future viability.

Our commitment to fair working conditions and social partnership has been part of our company mission statement since 2004. Our principles are derived from the key labour standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO). METRO has been a member of the UN Global Compact since 2010. Membership of this initiative underlines our conduct as a responsible, international company.

Anti-discrimination

As an equal opportunity employer, the METRO operates on the basis of clear principles: Fair treatment of all employees. Promotion of all employees according to their abilities. Equal opportunity for all personnel and applicants.

METRO fulfils its duty of care. We want to uphold our principles of fair working conditions across the board. An audit process is designed to ensure that the company is not involved in violating human rights, either directly or indirectly. We aim to have audited all METRO/MAKRO Cash & Carry organisations around the world by 2020. Our objective is to identify any weaknesses and develop countermeasures.

The assessments started in 2014 with the MCC Countries Turkey, Poland and Austria. The second Pilot took place in Ukraine in October 2016. Further assessments took place in 2017 in current MCC Countries: Pakistan, Bulgaria, China, Japan and Hungary.
