Lobbying in the EU

The new METRO generates almost 80 per cent of its sales in the EU and is active in 18 member states. With this in mind, we are dedicated to helping Project Europe succeed. That is why we are present in Brussels, where the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the EU work to ensure the safety and economic strength of the EU. A large number of other players also have representations there to discuss political issues: the Committee of the Regions, the Economic and Social Committee, numerous associations, non-governmental organisations and companies.

We are in regular contact with European institutions. We value dialogue with players in civil society. We hold one-to-one talks – and take part in expert groups and consultation processes at the European Commission and Parliament.

We also regularly invite stakeholders to discuss European issues at the Wednesday Socials we host in Brussels.

We are active online with our digital office EU . Our website generates transparency and provides information about our advocacy issues and our lobbying team.

The team from the Brussels office tweets about politics, retail and consumer issues using the account @METRO_EU.

METRO also launched Brussels Wednesday Socials in late 2013. Twice a year, it hosts debates about issues that affect Europe and retail, with guest speakers from the political arena, business and society. Our aim is to bring people together, exchange viewpoints and learn from one another.

Our Wednesday Socials in Brussels are organised in conjunction with strong cooperation partners: the European Movement International (EMI) and EuroCommerce, the European umbrella association for retail and wholesale. This event is based on our well-known Wednesday Socials in Berlin. [Link einfügen zur Berliner Mittwochsgesellschaft]

You are very welcome to take part in our discussions, either by joining us at Solvay Library in Brussels, using the Wednesday Socials page in the digital representative office Brussels or contributing on Twitter using the hashtag #WSBRU.

You can find videos of all our previous Wednesday Socials on our Youtube channel.
