The new METRO seeks dialogue with policymakers and society. We get involved. We adopt a position. We work together to find solutions. All in a way which is open, transparent and focused on dialogue.

METRO actively gets involved because stakeholders from the political arena and society rightly expect businesses to contribute to current debates with their expertise. There are plenty of issues which are close to many people’s hearts, such as environmental and consumer protection, food safety, and the relationship between employers and employees. METRO discusses challenges, adopts a position and seeks solutions as a matter of course. Ongoing dialogue with all stakeholders is embedded in our corporate strategy as a fixed part of our mission statement.

Our lobbying activities are coordinated by our Corporate Communications and Public Policy team, which is based at our head office in Düsseldorf. In addition to this, we have group offices in Germany and abroad and are actively involved in industry associations. We are present wherever decisions are made which affect our industry and our company. We want to talk to our stakeholders directly. We want to listen to suggestions. And we want to make our interests transparent.

METRO is guided by the principles of responsible lobbying. For us, that means:

  • Our lobbying work is transparent and consistent.
  • Our objectives and instruments and clearly identifiable.
  • The same message is communicated to everyone.
  • Our work is in line with our sustainability strategy.

Wide-ranging activities and commitments underline our responsible approach:

METRO is registered in the EU's Transparency Register. This means that we have undertaken to observe the register’s code of conduct.

METRO has clearly endorsed a ratification of the UN Convention against Corruption in the interests of responsible lobbying.

METRO was the first to sign the Code of Responsible Conduct for Business, which it also co-initiated.

In addition to this, METRO makes a responsible contribution with its involvement in selected associations.

Our home market is Germany and our head office is in Düsseldorf, so politics in Germany play a special role for us. Because of this, we have a group office in Berlin.
